Glitter Patchwork

This is a play on the patchwork tape effect.  It was one of those designs where I started out not have any idea how it would turn out.  I know that the picture makes the polish look red, but it's actually a baby pink - blame the camera :)

For directions on who to get the patchwork effect, refer to my Fun with Patchwork blog entry.

Super-duper close-up!!

White - Pure Ice (981CP) "Super Star!"
Green - Sinful Colors (932) "Call You Later"
Pink -  Wet n Wild, Wild Shine (435G) "Sparkled"

Gradient Attempt #2

Another try at the gradient effect.  This one was a bit trickier because the colours I wanted tt use ended not being completely solid.

For a tutorial effect, refer to the Gradient tutorial blog entry, for a link to a great how-to page.

Base - Revlon (089) "Sunshine Sparkle"
Tip - Revlon (120) "Hushed Blush"

Mad About Matte

I've been trying to get my hands on a matte polish for a while, but until recently, not many brands made it.  Even though Essie and China Glaze make it, I'm not totally down with paying $15 for a bottle.  Luckily I found NYC's version for an affordable $2.

For a tutorial of how to do this tiger design, refer to the Tiger Print entry.  It was hard to get the full effect in a picture, so here's a couple in different lights.

Base - Pure Ice (980 CP) "Black Rage"
Top Coat - NYC (274) "Matte Me Crazy"

Salon Effects - Sparkle Skulls

Inspired By - Holiday Visions Barbie

Recently I watched a tv show that focused on a vintage Barbie collector, and I saw Holiday Visions Barbie, so I tried to recreate a colour that matched the doll.  (This colour is also my own personal way of coping with the fact that summer is over, and a long cold winter is on its way).  I love the combination of the tones of blue and purple, and how nicely it pairs with the silver.  The topcoat is a clear base with silver micro-glitter and chunky blue and purple round glitter.

Super-duper close-up!!

Base - Sally Hansen Hard As Nails: (850) "Pumping Iron".
Top Coat - 2 thick coats - NYC Long Wearing Enamel: (105) : "Starry Silver Glitter"

Dupe of the Day Review - Blue Addicted

While my local drugstore has begun to carry this brand in Canada, as far as I know, they do not carry this particular colour in North America.  Fortunately for me, I've got a stand up friend, who picked up a few bottles for me on her latest exchange to Switzerland, so shout-out to her for being a stellar pal :) - she can get all the free mani's she wants.

This is a dupe of Deborah Lippman's "Across the Universe".  Essence's "Blue Addicted" is a dead ringer.  It looks extremely similar to the original.  It is a navy blue jelly base with emerald green and royal blue micro and hexagonal glitter.  No need to layer it over another colour, you will get great results with 2 or 3 thick coats.

Verdict - Get it.  Get your hands on it any way you can.  Although it's a third of the size of the DL bottle, it is also almost a tenth of the price, at only 2 dollars, max.  If you happen to be taking a trip to Europe, they sell it at their local convenience stores, so stock up, and bring back a bottle for me :).

2-3 thick coats - Essence, Color & Go: (78) Blue Addicted

Base - Pure Ice (616 CP) "Wild Thing"
Top Coat - 2 coats - Sinful Colors (932) "Call You Later".

Dupe of the Day Review - Whimsical

'Dupe of the Day' will be a blog post where I try to find cheaper knockoffs of the expensive nail polishes that I can't bring myself to pay for, and let you know if it's worth purchasing.  As some of you know, I am OBSESSED With Deborah Lippman brand nail polishes.  They're everything I love in a good polish:  super glittery, shiny, and named after celebrities and some of my favourite songs.  What I don't love is the fact that a single bottle will rack me up about 20 bucks.

This particular polish is a knockoff of Deborah Lippman's "Glitter in the Air".  Made by Revlon, "Whimsical" is an almost transparent blue base with mini and hexagonal baby blue and baby pink glitter.  I had high hopes for this one, but was a bit let down since it was so sheer - which means it had to be layered over a similar coloured, more solid polish.

Verdict - Skip it.  It looks great in the bottle, but it's a real let-down when you realize how transparent it is.  In addition, you really have to fish for the larger pieces of glitter.

Base - Pure Ice (974 CP) "A List"
Top Coat - 2 coats - Revlon (430) "Whimsical"

Base - Sally Hansen Hard As Nails:  Xtreme Wear (320) "Fucshia Power"

More Cheetah

Surprise, surprise, another cheetah design.  Used the colours to match my outfit for an evening out, thought I'd share.   As always, for a tutorial, refer to leopard print blog entry.

Base - Sally Hansen Hard As Nails: (850) "Pumping Iron".

Checkerboard

This one was pretty messy, since I was getting used to a stamper that is a different brand than I'm used to, but I thought Id post it anyway.  Instead of my usual Konad brand stamping plates, this is the 'As Seen on TV' brand.

First attempt at Gradient

First time trying this method, but it turned out to be super easy.  With a cool effect, this may take the place of leopard print as my new go-to design.  I know, it's kinda messy around the cuticles, but I was too lazy to clean up the edges.

All you need is two colours (Preferably solid colours, that aren't sheer or sparkly), a makeup sponge, a toothpick and a scratchpad (a piece of cardboard or paper that won't absorb the nail polish).

Colours used:  Sally Hansen Hard As Nails:  Xtreme Wear (340) "Mint Sorbet", and Sally Hansen Hard As Nails:  Xtreme Wear (320) "Fucshia Power".

Here is the picture tutorial I used, care of The Nailasaurus : Gradient Nails

Inspired By - Monarch Butterflies

I adore this design, but boy, it sure takes patience and a steady hand.  By the time I finished the left hand, I did not have it in me to do the right.

Inspiration:

1)  One thick base coat - Orange -  Sinful Colors (30) "Courtney Orange".
2)  Using dotting tool and thin brush, draw on black outline, then proceed to fill in spaces near nail tip -  Pure Ice (980 CP) "Black Rage".
3)  Using small end of dotting tool, make spots - Sally Hansen, Hard As Nails:  Xtreme Wear (300) "White On".
